He specialises in modern British history, from the early 19th century to the present, focusing particularly on political history, the relationship between Britain and Europe, and the history of ideas. He is the author of Democracy and the Vote in British Politics (2011), co-editor of Making Thatcher's Britain (2012) and author of Yes to Europe! The 1975 Referendum and Seventies Britain (2018), winner of the American Historical Institute's 2019 Morris D. Forkosch Prize. He has published research articles on 'Brexit and Empire', 'Religious Routes to Women's Suffrage', 'God and the Great Reform Act' and many other subjects, and has contributed to numerous media outlets including BBC Newsnight, the New Statesman, Unherd, The Times, The Guardian, The Financial Times, CNN and Radio 4 In Our Time.
