Supported by the Google DeepMind Research Ready funding stream, the Queen Mary University of London programme is designed to help solve some critical challenges leading to lack of representation in AI and to help build stronger and more inclusive AI communities. The programme specifically empowers students who identify as female, who are Black, Asian, or from an ethnic minority background, or those from low-income households to consider further study and future employment in AI research and technologies.

Throughout the programme, participants will immerse themselves in the world of AI, learning from leading academics and industry experts at Queen Mary. The curriculum will cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Data Science fundamentals: students will gain a comprehensive understanding of data analysis, modelling, and machine learning techniques.
  • Generative AI: the course delves into cutting edge AI with a focus on creative applications like text generation and image synthesis.
  • Research methods: programme participants will hone essential research skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and ethical considerations.
  • Industry talks and networking will foster connections with leading AI professionals and gain insights into the real-world applications of this technology.

Alongside theoretical learning, students will participate in a four-week supervised research project, working alongside PhD students and researchers on real-world challenges at the forefront of AI. This hands-on experience will provide them with valuable research skills and a deeper understanding of the field.

Student Eligibility and Application:

  • Be a UK citizen or resident for at least 3 consecutive years prior to undergraduate studies.
  • Identify as female, Black, Asian, or from an ethnic minority background, or from a low-income with the household less than £35,000.
  • Currently studying Computer Science, AI, or a closely related field such as Data Science, Physics, Maths, Neuroscience, at a UK university.

Professor Steve Uhlig, Head of School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science and Professor of Networks at Queen Mary, emphasises the importance of the programme: "AI holds immense potential to shape our future. However, there's a critical need for diverse voices and perspectives to drive its development. The Research Ready Programme is a crucial step in breaking down barriers and ensuring everyone can contribute to this transformative field. We're excited to welcome enthusiastic students and help them inspire a deep love for AI and give them the foundation to become influential figures in the AI landscape."

Applications open on January 22nd, 2024, and close on April 5th, 2024. Visit the programme website for more information and to submit your application. An applicant information webinar will be held on February 28th, 2024, at 3pm to answer your questions and guide you through the application process.
