Professor Steve Thornton appointed as Vice Principal (Health)

QMUL has announced the appointment of Professor Steve Thornton as Vice Principal (Health) and Executive Dean of the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Professor Thornton joins QMUL from the University of Exeter and will take up his post from January 2015.

Professor Thornton is a distinguished clinical scientist whose speciality is Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a particular focus on pre-term labour , he will be joining us from the University of Exeter where he is Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean of Medicine.  Prior to this he has held held positions at the universities of Newcastle, Cambridge, Warwick and (as Dean) the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry before he assumed his current role as the inaugural Dean of the University of Exeter Medical School.

Professor Simon Gaskell, President and Principal of QMUL, said: “Steve has combined a highly distinguished medical career with success in the senior leadership positions that he has held. We are delighted that he is joining QMUL, where he will help to maintain the world class research output from the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the development of teaching provision both in the UK and overseas, and the ongoing and exciting collaborative ventures taking place across London and well beyond.”

Professor Steve Thornton said: “I am delighted to be joining the university’s senior team as Vice-Principal for Health and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Queen Mary has an outstanding reputation for teaching and learning which is underpinned by excellence in research and innovation.

“I’m honoured to be joining an organisation with such a long and illustrious reputation as the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Medicine and Dentistry and the associated Life Sciences lay at the heart of many of the innovative developments taking place at Queen Mary and I look forward to engaging with these, and in particular the distinctive opportunities offered by working with colleagues and communities in London.”
