Start Ups join Stand Ups at new QM comedy night

East London comedian, Marc Burrows, will join young local business brains at a unique evening of entertainment at Queen Mary, University of London on Thursday 31 May.

Published on:

‘Start Up Stand Up’ sees East End entrepreneurs from technology start-ups share the spotlight with up and coming comedians at Draper’s Bar & Kitchen, the College student bar.

Young business people will give light-hearted reflections on their road to success, aiming to inspire the audience to start their own businesses.

Confirmed guests at the Mile End campus venue include; comedian, writer, radio presenter and musician Marc Burrows; representatives from Zaawi - a mobile business marketing tool; and Nick Beck, managing director of web marketing agency Tug Search.

Burrows, who describes his humour as ‘quite silly and occasionally very geeky’, currently presents a weekly live show on Shoreditch Radio. Since embarking on a stand-up comedy career in 2009, he has performed at many of the UK’s most prestigious comedy clubs and shared bills with some of the biggest acts in the country, including Dara O’Brien and Russell Kane.

The brand new night is for Queen Mary students only and is run by QM student society Queen Mary Entrepreneurs and QM Careers - Queen Mary’s careers service. The event has been organisaed in association with the National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs (NACUE).

Emily Huns, Head of QM Careers at Queen Mary says: “This out-of-the-ordinary event will see entrepreneurial businesses share their experiences and opportunities with our students. There is an exciting and growing culture of entrepreneurship at QM. As well as supporting students thinking about launching their own business, we're finding new ways - like this event - to network students with existing start-ups. Work experience in a small, entrepreneurial organisation is a great way of building a range of skills fast."

The full line-up:

  • Talk by David Young (NACUE) - TBC
  • Mike Milord from Zaawi - Starting A Start Up
  • David Graydon from YoButler! - Start-up vs Career
  • Nick Beck from Tug Search - Working In A Small Company
