David studies BA Film Studies.
The university's close proximity to London majorly appealed to me and I saw it as a massive benefit for the subject I wanted to study. Queen Mary being a Russell Group university and knowing the importance that is placed on research was also an integral factor.
I chose to study at Queen Mary as when researching the course structures of film related degrees, Queen Mary’s Film Studies module content seemed the most exciting and fascinating to me. I have always had a passion for the practical aspects of film – what goes on behind the scenes, like cinematography, editing etc., but I’m also interested in loftier discussions and discourses around what cinema is, can do and where it came from. Film courses that have a nice balance of both practical and theory like this are few and far between. Therefore, Queen Mary’s Film Studies was the perfect fit for me.
One of my favourite things about my course/academic school is how helpful and supportive all the staff are. If I ever have a piece of coursework to do and feel as though I need guidance, I can at any time send one of my lecturers or seminar leaders an email and they will meet with me to help go over anything. They actively encourage their students to seek help if you need it, whether that’s in preparation for an assignment or to reflect on the results of an assignment.
I love how my lecturers encourage students to have their own voice. They want to hear your own personal thoughts and observations on a piece of reading, or a film. There is never really a right or wrong answer – in summation, they guide you to find your own individual and unique standpoint on common topics, issues and themes. Furthermore, I also love how my lectures and seminar leaders are practitioners. Many are filmmakers themselves, creating and developing their own projects and creative visions.
I believe studying this degree has helped me gain a greater breadth and depth of knowledge around what cinema is and what is has the potential to be.
I love music and playing instruments. Of course, I also enjoy going to the cinema and watching Films/TV shows whenever I can.
Really take London for all that it has to offer! Again London is such a massive hub of creativity full of people from all backgrounds - meet and get to know people and get to know people! In relation to Film, again globally is one of the largest hubs for creative individuals and the Entertainment industry.
