Academic Skills

Helping students to realise their potential

Academic Skills Enhancement (ASE) supports students in developing the skills they need to excel at university. We do this by delivering one-to-one tutorials, workshops and online resources for students at all levels. We also work with peer mentors and collaborate with academic staff to embed our support into the curriculum.

Our Masters Dissertation Workshop series, Summer 2020

In the summer 2020, we developed a series of workshops to support Master's students on various aspects of the dissertation project that students find challenging.

As campus was closed for in-person teaching, we delivered the series online. We used Microsoft Teams to maintain a sense of connection among students: taking questions, sharing resources and recordings of the workshops that students could follow in their own time, whatever time zone they found themselves in.

Live workshops and group writing sessions were conducted on Blackboard Collaborate

“The Master’s Dissertation Workshops were very useful, especially during the current pandemic. They helped me to incorporate all the main sections of the dissertation from creating a research question, literature review, methodology, to the conclusion. Olu and Jack were excellent facilitators of the sessions and made themselves available for 1-1 meetings, which helped to address any questions or concerns I had. Thank you for making these workshops available!”
