Professor Bruce Kidd

Bruce

Head of Year 4

Email: b.l.kidd@qmul.ac.uk

Profile

I have over thirty years of experience of planning and delivering medical education programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and during this time have seen important developments in medical education including the shift to student centered approaches to teaching and learning. .

Teaching

I am currently Head of MBBS Year 4, Deputy Dean for Education within Barts & The London School of Medicine and past Chair of the Medical Curriculum Committee with the remit to critically appraise and revise the MBBS program. I have led a team that has introduced a number of program enhancements related to curricular design, delivery, student assessment and student support.

I have served as Chair of a number of national postgraduate training committees which oversaw the introduction of a number of quality measures including more rigorous feedback mechanisms from trainees, changes to syllabus, as well as more general curriculum development.

Research

Research Interests:

My research activities developed in order to explore interactions between the nervous and locomotor systems. The central aims were: (1) to characterise pharmacological mechanisms of joint pain that have potential for therapeutic intervention; and (2) understand the influence of neurogenic mechanisms on the outcome of inflammatory arthritis.  In collaboration with academic and industrial groups I developed several novel experimental models of arthritic pain. My group also developed novel (capsaicin-based) clinical techniques to assess changes within pain pathways during inflammation that have been adopted by a number of pain research groups . We published the first direct clinical evidence of enhanced sensitivity within central neurones during chronic arthritis. My group also used a variety of experimental models to characterise the distribution of sensory fibres and neurally-derived peptides within the mammalian joint. The influence of these peptides (eg substance P) on aspects of the inflammatory cascade was been explored.
