Dr Safiya Virji

Clinical Senior Lecturer in Community Based Medical Education

Dr Virji works as a GP and an educator within the NHS. She graduated from Imperial College London with an MBBS and BSc in Healthcare Management in 2006 and went on to hold the position of Future GP Education Lead for Luton CCG. During this time she completed an MA in Medical Education. She also worked as a clinical lecturer in postgraduate medical education for 4 years.

Her interest in GP recruitment and retention led to Dr Virji becoming the Postgraduate GP Training Programme Director for Health Education East of England, which she combined with a Clinical Director and Governing Body member role for Luton CCG – tackling the challenges of high patient demands and limited resources in primary care from the grass roots level.

In 2021, when her term as a Clinical Director came to an end, Dr Virji joined Queen Mary’s University of London as a senior clinical lecturer for the Community-Based Medical Education Department and is also Deputy Head of Year 3 of the medical school. Dr Virji combines this with her role as a postgraduate Training Programme Director, Out of Hours GP supervisor and GP Appraiser.
