Support while on placement
For all IHSE students, placements is an integral and valuable part of your course, offering essential hands-on experience. However, we understand that life can be unpredictable and this means, at times, it can be challenge to manage the demands of placement.
While each trust will have a support team available to provide support at placement, the Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE) Student Support Service can provide support in addition to what you are accessing at placement. If you would like to discuss support options while you are on placement, please contact our team on ihse-student-support@qmul.ac.uk or book an appointment using this booking link.
The two key services we offer to students on placement are:
Creating Health Passports
For students with long-term health conditions, disabilities, or learning difficulties, a Health Passport can help communicate your needs effectively to staff and placement providers.
We support you in creating and using a Health Passport to ensure you receive appropriate adjustments and accommodations throughout your academic journey. It is strongly recommended that all students who have long-term health conditions, disabilities or learning difficulties have a health passport produced, if you are a current student who feels that they would benefit from a health passport please book an appointment with a member of the team.

Guidance on the Extenuating Circumstances Affecting Placement (ECAP) process
The ECAP process allows students to request changes to their placement allocation on the basis that their reasonings meet a specific criteria. Our team can help you navigate the ECAP process; providing guidance on eligibility and support you in submitting an ECAP request. While the IHSE Student Support team does not make the decisions on ECAP requests, they can provide support to you before, during and after the process.
Sometimes, ECAP requests can be approved however, there may not space to move you to a different trust. Our service can support you with developing a plan to manage your placement responsibilities and your current circumstances.
For further information on the ECAP process, check out the 2025/26 guidance document.
