Global Engagement Office

The Global Engagement Office, with staff based in London, Beijing, Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and Lahore, works to ensure that our prospective and existing International students (from over 170 countries), and those looking for an overseas experience as part of their Queen Mary degree, receive the best experience possible.

The Global Engagement Office is made up of three teams:

  • The International Student Recruitment team is made up of regional specialists who promote the various study opportunities available at Queen Mary to international students with a view to meeting recruitment targets.
  • The International Partnerships team support and work with Schools to advise on, develop, nurture, promote, expand and review international partnerships with like-minded institutions and sponsor bodies around the world.
  • Our Global Opportunities team lead on all of the institutions’ incoming and outgoing student mobility programmes, including Study Abroad, International & European Exchanges, and our Summer School. The team also manage funding through the UK governments’ Turing Scheme.

All of the work of the Global Engagement Office is aligned with the 2030 Strategy and the Global Engagement strategy (2019–2022).

Lee has been working in the International Higher Education Sector 
for 17 years since graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a BA English 
in 2004. Joining the International Office at Queen Mary in 2007, Lee took on the role of Head of International Student Recruitment before taking up the position of Director of Global Engagement in 2017, overseeing Queen Mary’s international and EU student recruitment, international partnerships and student mobility initiatives, along with the development of the Queen Mary Global Engagement Strategy.

Teams within the Global Engagement Office

International Student Recruitment (ISR) is part of the wider Global Engagement office and focuses on promoting Queen Mary programmes overseas and recruiting international students at all levels of study (pathway, undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research). We have 8 members of staff based in London with responsibility for recruitment from regions such as Africa, Europe, Middle East and Latin America, and 13 staff overseas based in Beijing, Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, Lahore and Wisconsin. ISR also manage a network of over 100 overseas agents.

On an annual basis ISR staff typically travel to over 55 countries worldwide to promote Queen Mary programmes. Managing enquires from point of contact through to enrolment; ISR act as a conduit between prospective students, their influencers and the institution. Our activities include: 

  • Delivering the international student recruitment objectives in the 2030 Strategy with particular focus on recruitment that enables us to achieve the 2030 Strategic Objectives and improved reputation 
  • Supporting Schools and Institutes in achieving their international student recruitment goals
  • Representing Queen Mary at overseas events and exhibitions, and in the UK at recruitment events targeted at international students
  • Relationship building with government organisations (particularly scholarship bodies), universities, schools, British Council offices and other influencers
  • Leading on international student conversion activity, including webinars, outbound calling campaigns and email communications
  • Managing and supporting our network of overseas agents and commission process
  • Managing the relationship with external pathway providers, such as Kaplan
  • Hosting inbound visits such as Agent Conferences and sponsor delegations
  • Contributing to new programme development and providing market intelligence to Schools and Institutes
  • Maintaining the international student webpages 

The International Partnerships team works with a wide network of institutions on education partnerships. This includes developing, managing and overseeing collaborations with overseas institutions that lead to a Queen Mary award. Through our work, we support student recruitment activities and the development of new Transnational Education (TNE) partnerships.  

We provide Queen Mary colleagues with advice and guidance on the different models of collaboration and assist them in developing partnerships, whether through existing relationships or establishing new ones. We can also provide background information on our partnership engagement in key markets and an overview of Queen Mary’s relationship with specific partners as well as information on TNE policy in our priority markets.

The Global Opportunities team manages and promotes programmes which allow Queen Mary students to study and travel overseas. These include our International Exchange and European Exchange programmes, as well as our Overseas Summer Schools

Colleagues within Global Opportunities also manage the Study Abroad Programme and the Queen Mary Summer School which recruit and support overseas students who come to study abroad at Queen Mary on these programmes; on a fee-paying basis and through our reciprocal arrangements with partners around the world.
