Who this applies to
Anyone using or charging personal electronic devices on campus — phones, laptops, tablets, power banks, e-readers and similar devices.

✓ Do • Use manufacturer-approved chargers • Charge on hard, non-combustible surfaces • Disconnect once fully charged where practicable • Keep devices away from bedding, papers and soft furnishings |
✗ Do not • Use counterfeit or unbranded replacement chargers • Charge under pillows or on beds • Leave devices charging unattended overnight |
Emergency response — staged approach
Stage 1 — Overheating

Disconnect the device from power if it is safe to do so. Monitor the situation. Keep all combustible materials clear of the device. |
Stage 2 — Swelling
|
Do not continue to use or charge the device. Clear the immediate area. Notify Security. |
Stage 3 — Smoke or fire
|
DO NOT inhale smoke — gases are acutely toxic. Leave the area immediately. Raise the alarm. Call 999 then Security on 3333 (internal) or 020 7882 3333 (external). |
Reporting and disposal
Report any swelling, unusual heat, odour or damage to your device to the Fire Safety (INSERT LINK) Team or Security immediately (INSERT LINK). Do not continue to use a suspect device.
