E-Bikes & E-Scooters
Campus rules, charging & storage
University campus rule
E-bikes and e-scooters are PERMITTED on campus grounds.
They are NOT PERMITTED inside any University building.
This applies to the device and to removable batteries brought inside for charging.
Who this applies to
Students, staff and visitors bringing e-bikes, e-scooters, or removable e-mobility batteries onto campus.
|
✓ Do • Use only the charger supplied by the manufacturer • Keep batteries clear of escape routes at all times • Store and charge in designated external or non-residential areas only • Remove the battery before storing the device if required by the storage area rules |
✗ Do not • Bring e-bikes, e-scooters or their batteries into any University building • Charge in bedrooms, corridors or stairwells • Charge DIY or modified "conversion kit" systems — strictly prohibited • Leave charging unattended overnight |
Prohibited equipment
|
DIY and conversion kit battery systems are strictly prohibited in all University buildings. These systems use non-standard batteries and chargers that do not meet the safety standards of manufactured devices. The risk of thermal runaway is significantly higher. |
If a battery overheats or catches fire
|
E-bike and e-scooter batteries release large volumes of toxic gas very rapidly. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire. Leave the area immediately, raise the alarm, and call 999 then Security on 3333. |
E-mobility battery fires are significantly more dangerous than small device fires. A burning e-bike battery can re-ignite hours after appearing to be extinguished. The Fire and Rescue Service must be involved.
Reporting damage or defects
Report any swelling, damage, unusual heat or odour to Security immediately. Do not attempt to move a suspect battery without guidance.

Contact the Fire Safety Team before bringing any new type of e-mobility device or charging system onto campus. |
