Project: Developing a Reporting Framework

Partner: Citizens UK

Citizens UK brings together everyday people and local organisations to build a better, fairer society. Citizens UK build positive working relationships between communities, elected power-holders and businesses, making sure everyone is heard and no one is left out. Citizens UK share tools, techniques and hard-won experience to shift the balance of power, bringing people together across their differences, to find common ground and win change. They are best-known for establishing the Living Wage Campaign in 2001. They’ve had 600 organisations participating, 4000+ community leaders trained, 13,000 Living Wage employers, and hundreds of campaigns won since we were founded in 1989.

London's diverse communities face increasing social fragmentation and mistrust, and this project explores how the history of interfaith relations in east London can inform and strengthen community organising today.

Project

Devise a Community Research Report. London's diverse communities face increasing social fragmentation and mistrust, and this project explores how the history of interfaith relations in east London can inform and strengthen community organising today.

Research Questions

  • What role have interfaith networks played in the development of local civil society and grassroots community organising in East London since the 1960s?
  • How have different religious communities collaborated in community organising during periods of social and economic crisis in modern Britain?
  • To what extent has interfaith cooperation functioned as a form of social capital that enables effective community organising in multicultural urban settings?

In this project, students will develop a research report which combines:

  • Qualitative data based on listening to community faith leaders.
  • Academic reflection on dominant historical analysis.
