I studied at the Universities of Milan and Cambridge, where I obtained my doctorate in 2000. I have taught at Birkbeck College and Queen Mary College. I was Visiting professor at the University of Calabria, Arcavacata (2015) and and Professeur Invité, École Normale Supérieure, Paris (2017).

I have held fellowships at CRASSH (2004), Birkbeck (2005), Princeton (2006) and the Center For European Studies at Harvard (2013), at the Instituto Ciencias Sociais, (ICS), Lisbon (2015), at the Casa Velasquez, Madrid (2016). I am currently holding a EURIAS mobility fellow at the Madrid Institute of Advanced Studies (2017-18), and have been awarded a Fernand Braudel Fellowship at European University Institute, Florence for the Autumn 2018.


Research Interests:

I specialise in intellectual, political and cultural history, with a focus Southern Europe, the Mediterranean and Italy in the nineteenth century, and on transnational connections and exchanges. I am currently completing a history of the 1820s revolutions of Southern Europe in global context, to be published with Princeton University Press.

I was a member of the Steering committee of a 3 year Leverhulme (link is external)-funded network on “Rethinking Democracy in the Mediterranean 1750-1850”, and holder of a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (link is external) (2013-2014) to work on Southern Europe in the Age of Revolutions. My research interests include:

- Southern Europe and the Mediterranean and their relationship with the rest of the world in the nineteenth century
- Transnational and global intellectual history
- The Italian Risorgimento
