The UKKCC is a collaborative network of clinicians, pathologists and scientists aiming to support internationally competitive research in keratinocyte cancer. Our mission is to support epidemiological and molecular research of excellence in the UK for the benefit of all. The UKKCC committee, chaired by Professor Irene Leigh (BCSC Director emeritus), includes leading national experts, and is supported by the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD).
Building a molecular atlas for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma
The UKKCC is leading an ambitious project to build a comprehensive molecular atlas for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Our first priority is the establishment of a UK-wide biobank of cSCC samples, including both fresh frozen tumours (FFT) and archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumours. This resource will enable in-depth transcriptomic and immunological profiling, providing new insights into the molecular mechanisms driving cSCC development and progression, an area which is currently poorly understood.
The study is led by Professor Charlotte Proby (Chief Investigator) and is sponsored by the University of Dundee. Our collaborators consist of a consortium of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, pathologists, and epidemiologists approaching 20 sites across the UK, with more centres joining regularly. Anyone interested in contributing to this important initiative is encouraged to contact Professor Proby to discuss collaboration opportunities.
