2025 QMplus Upgrade
The QMplus upgrade will take place on Tuesday 8th July 2025. QMplus will be unavailable all day from 8am (BST). The QMplus archives, including the 2024/25 archive will be available on upgrade day.
Upgrading QMplus brings a variety of benefits including bug fixes, new features and performance improvements.
QMplus is our name for Moodle. We are moving from Moodle 4.3 to Moodle 4.5.
The upgrade will take place on Tuesday 8th July. QMplus will be unavailable all day from 8am (BST).
Yes. The QMplus archives, including the 2024/25 archive will be available on the day of the upgrade. They are unaffected.
However, as QMplus will be unavailable, you won’t be able to use the links to the archive that are in the QMplus footer. You will have to use the archive index page.
Please also note:
- The QMplus snapshot will be taken on Tuesday 25th June. Any changes to QMplus after this date will not be in the 2024/25 archive.
- If you are accessing archives older than 2024/25 you will need to be on campus or using AppsAnywhere or a VPN.
- As we only keep QMplus archives going back 5 years, the 2019/20 archive will no longer be unavailable after the upgrade.
No. Our main priority is to perform the upgrade with as little disruption as possible. We aim to keep any work staff have to do for the upgrade to a minimum. You should only have to do the usual amount of work expected to prepare your module(s) for the next academic year.
No, you can start updating your modules now. Just make your updates as you normally would on QMplus. All your changes will still be there after the upgrade.
If you have questions about getting 2025/26 versions of your modules created on QMplus, please speak to your local QMplus contact. Responsibility for rolling over modules usually lies with Schools and Departments.
If you don’t have a local contact, please raise a ticket on the ServiceDesk and a member of the TELT will help.
We are still finalising the details of the rollover process and will communicate with our network of QMplus administrators in Schools as soon as we can.
Please contact your local QMplus support if you have any questions about the rollover process in your part of the University.
If you do not have local QMplus support staff, please raise a ticket on the ServiceDesk and the TELT support team will assist you.
As we are moving from Moodle 4.3 to 4.5 we will be getting the new features from both Moodle 4.4 and 4.5. These include:
- A refreshed set of icons which are more accessible and including file icons which indicate the file type.
- A subsection feature which provides an improved way to structure your module pages reducing clutter and along with a new view section on a page feature, allowing your students to focus on what matters.
- A new default text editor
- Improvements to the assignment activity
- For staff - easier navigation through the submissions page with less scrolling
- For students - new notifications for upcoming due dates and overdue work
- Gradebook - the return of the activity link at the top of the gradebook, removed in our upgrade last year.
All of our teaching and learning systems are in the process of introducing AI features and QMplus is no different. The upgrade does bring some AI features to QMplus however these features are relatively basic and we will not be turning them on during the upgrade.
There are a number of decisions which need to be made before we move forward with this. Some technical, such as which Large Language Model (LLM) we use and some user focussed, such as which users we want to make features available to. The upgrade will bring the possibility of the following:
- Text and image generation in the visual editor
- Content summaries
Obviously AI is of massive interest and we want to explore the possibilities however this requires discussion before making the features available.
For the time being, if you want to learn more about AI in Moodle you can find out more in the following resources.
This video describes the AI features available in Moodle 4.5, the version we are upgrading to in the summer.
Your local QMplus support contact is the best place to start if you have any questions or concerns.
You can also get help by raising a ticket on the ServiceDesk. State that it is regarding the QMplus upgrade and it will be directed to the TELT.
