Technician commitment

Technician commitment

The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative – led by a steering group of sector bodies, with support from the Science Council and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation – to help address key challenges facing technical staff and to support institutions in driving forward positive changes.

I am delighted to support the Technician Commitment Action Plan developed at Queen Mary University of London. We recently launched our ambitious new University Strategy which is based on our two core areas of activity: education and the student experience, and research and innovation.

The heart of this Strategy is the Queen Mary community and, naturally, our technical colleagues are part of that and will play a pivotal role in delivering and achieving our strategic objectives. This action plan is one aspect of our continuing commitment to support, develop and nurture our people so that they can be the best they can be.

Queen Mary pledges action to support technical staff

Queen Mary has joined more than half of UK universities and several research institutes in a pledge to better support our technicians.

In 2018 Anne Parry, the Technician Commitment Nominated Institutional Lead, established a Working Group with membership from all three faculties within the university and interested representatives from Central Professional Services Directorates. In order to ensure that the action plan created was deliverable and met the wider needs of the university, the group also includes academic representation and representatives from key functional teams who will be involved in implementing the plan, including Human Resources, Professional Development and Internal Communications.

The Technician Commitment Working Group has developed a 24-month action plan, outlining our plans to make sure that Queen Mary addresses the themes of the Technician Commitment (visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability) and details of how impact will be evidenced.
