One of the highlights of Morium’s placement was becoming part of a supportive team where she felt valued as an employee. Working alongside apprentices, graduates and experienced professionals, she quickly found her feet, built strong relationships with colleagues and gained first-hand experience of working in a professional engineering environment.
Morium found that the problem-solving and critical-thinking skills she developed during her Physics degree were particularly valuable in her role, where finding solutions quickly and working under pressure were key parts of the job. Her placement also helped her strengthen a range of transferable skills, including teamwork, communication, time management and the ability to take responsibility for tasks independently.
Taking on these responsibilities gave Morium the opportunity to develop her professionalism and confidence, while learning how to adapt to challenges and contribute to a team's shared goals. These experiences have helped her understand the skills employers look for and how she can apply her academic knowledge in a practical, workplace setting.
Morium’s advice to other students considering a placement year is to believe in their abilities and not underestimate what they can bring to a team, regardless of their age or experience. She highlighted how quickly students can settle into a role, build confidence and become valued members of a workplace.
Her experience highlights the value of a year in industry in bridging the gap between university and employment. By putting academic knowledge into practice, developing transferable skills and gaining real-world experience, students can strengthen their CVs and build confidence as they prepare for life after university.
