A year of opportunities, community and events: A message from Chemistry Society

From solving murders with IR spectroscopy to exploring the science behind skincare, QMSU’s Chemistry Society is kicking off another year of socials, science and career opportunities.

For our first event of the year, we held a Murder Mystery icebreaker for our first-year students, who worked hard to find the culprit hiding within our committee! Thanks to the help of our chemically gifted winners, sitting at the table pictured, we were able to apprehend the suspect and uphold justice. Our detectives had to analyse IR spectra, uncover fingerprints, test the pH of soil samples and analyse blood samples to piece together the evidence.

As a member of Chemistry Society, students have the opportunity to network with professionals across a variety of industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, materials science and more. In addition to this, we hold plenty of exciting social events, from creating cyanotypes with the Art Society to bar crawls, bowling nights and much more — all for just £2 membership for the whole year.

If you want to make a change within the society or would like to see a specific industry represented at one of our events, now is the perfect time to apply to become our First-Year Representative and make your voice heard. The First-Year Representative will liaise with the committee to ensure that our events reflect the interests of first-year students too, while gaining valuable experience to add to their CV.

Furthermore, we have partnerships with Gradcracker and the Royal Society of Chemistry, so whether you’re on the hunt for internships and graduate schemes or simply want to explore the opportunities available to you, we’ll be happy to show you how to access them. Our presence on Gradcracker also helps connect the society and its members with employers looking for STEM students and graduates.

As concerns around graduate employment continue to grow, I feel reassured knowing that we already have four networking events scheduled for this semester, and I hope you do too. Thinking about life after graduation can be stressful, but everyone on the Chemistry Society committee is dedicated to helping our members feel as prepared and confident as possible about what comes next.

With all of this academic pressure, you may be looking for a way to unwind: well look no further as at the end of the year we are hosting our annual School of Physical and Chemical Sciences ball, filled with delicious food, exciting music and all the best students from the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences in one place. It's our blockbuster event of the year, so we hope you don't miss it!

Whether you’re looking to meet people, explore where a Chemistry degree could take you, or just have a good time between lectures, we hope Chemistry Society has something for you. With plenty more planned for the year ahead, we’re only just getting started.

We’re looking forward to seeing what this year brings, and we hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!
