The University of Southampton and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) are Russell Group universities with world leading research programmes and are proud to offer Medical Research Council funded doctoral training programme (MRC DTP) PhD studentships. Students are based at Southampton or QMUL researching topics including Cancer Immunology, Infectious Disease, Inflammation and Bioengineering with the application of Digital Technologies in specific projects relevant to their subject areas (below). As a successful candidate you will join a vibrant PhD student community for a 4 year funded period of study from September 2024.

Programme Structure

Year 1

In year 1 you will choose three laboratory rotation projects in research groups at the cutting edge of experimental medicine. Taught modules are held in Research Methods (Southampton or QMUL), pathway specific topics and Quantitative Cell Biology, with practical training in bioinformatics and computational modelling of disease relevant datasets (taught in Southampton - all students attend*). An intermediate MRes is awarded after successful first year completion. This MRes is not offered for application separately.

Years 2-4

In years 2-4 you undertake your original research project in your chosen subject area, at your partner institution. We aim for you to become an active and valued member of a research lab led by one of our expert scientists.

Funding

Funding is available for a limited number of places. You must meet MRC student eligibility requirements. Studentships are paid at equivalent or above the standard UK Research Council recommended stipend. Fees will be covered for eligible students. Some projects have links with industry, including pharmaceutical companies, with potential for stipend enhancement.

How to apply

Applicants must hold a 1st class or 2:1 degree in a subject within the life sciences or physical sciences. For applicants with a background in life sciences, Maths, Statistics or Computing modules at A Level or undergraduate level are desirable, but not essential. For applicants with a background in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences modules at the undergraduate level are essential.

This Programme is collaborative, applications are to Southampton or QMUL. Please do NOT apply to both partners.

Step 1: Complete the QMUL online application here (the application form will only identify the MRes component, but your application is for the full programme).

Step 2: Complete the anonymous DTP application here
Your application cannot receive consideration until you have completed both applications.

Closing date

Applications will be open from 15 Nov 2023 to 14 Jan 2024.
