Academics, Postdoctoral Researchers and PhD Researchers

The School of Business and Management (SBM) welcomes international visiting scholars. There are a number of informal opportunities and formal schemes available for T&R staff wishing to host a visitor. Some visitors self-fund or receive external funding for their visit, others may qualify for some internal QM/SBM funding towards the costs associated with their visit. Schemes are outlined below.

Available opportunities for Visiting Scholars

School of Business and Management Distinguished Visiting Scholar Scheme

Distinguished Visiting Scholar are expected to give a public lecture, deliver a doctoral workshop, meet with ECRs and postgraduate research students, and take part in other events designed to encourage intensive discussion of research interests. Scholars will have a strong record of contribution to research in their field. Visiting scholars are senior academics invited by members of our teaching and research staff.

There is no maximum duration of time for a Distinguished Visiting Scholar, but a maximum grant of £5000 is available dependent on the length of the visit.

School of Business and Management Visiting Scholar Scheme

Visiting Scholar will be expected to take part in School research activities and to give a research seminar to staff and a workshop for graduate students. Visiting Scholars are invited and sponsored by SBM teaching and research staff.

SBM may award a grant of up to £1000 towards the cost of travel and accommodation and the School will provide desk, computer, library and office facilities for a period of between two and eight weeks.

Queen Mary Humanities and Social Sciences Distinguished Visiting Fellowships Scheme

The aim of this Faculty (HSS) scheme is to attract major international research and scholarly figures to spend a period of time resident at QMUL and to interact with the scholarly community within and between the respective Schools of the Faculty. Entry to the scheme is by nomination from Schools within the Faculty, followed by Faculty Executive approval. Applications should be made by an SBM teaching and research staff member.

Funding usually covers the cost of the Fellow’s on-campus accommodation during the period of residency.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (2025 Call) – Calls for Expressions of Interest 

 

The School Business and Management (SBM) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) welcomes Expressions of Interest from postdoctoral researchers with an excellent track record to apply jointly with a QMUL supervisor to the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships – call 2025 funded by the European Commission (EC). 

MSCA Fellowships are aimed at attracting excellent researchers of any nationality who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary, and inter-sectoral mobility. 

About the School of Business and Management at QMUL 

SBM is the largest School within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at QMUL, with 3,000+ students, 120+ faculty and 40+ professional services staff, well-connected with central services.  Since its inception in 2005, SBM has built a reputation for impactful research and education to promote social justice, sustainability and good governance in the management of private, public and voluntary organisations. Our mission foregrounds commitment to informing policy on social, economic, cultural and environmental challenges nationally and in our local East London setting. 

The School of Business and Management is made up of five departments, each specialising in specific areas of research and expertise:

SBM is a vibrant environment where research is organised around 10 overlapping research centres, groups and clusters, which provide intellectual meeting places for our researchers. 

QMUL also strongly promotes interdisciplinarity and collaborations across Schools notably via the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS), established in 2018 to enhance the research environment, support state-of-the art research, enable inter-disciplinary research activity of postdoctoral and early career researchers, organise and host research events and enhance QMUL’s external profile.  

What does the Fellowship offer? 

European Fellowships comprise a personalised research project between the Host Supervisor/Research group with academic and professional training and two-way sharing of know how. It must show a ‘best fit’ between fellow and PI supervisor and host. 

The fellowship offers a 12-24 month highly competitive researcher salary and research and training funds.  

Eligibility 

Applicants must apply jointly with a host organisation and should consult the SBM research pages to identify a group to host their MSCA fellowship. Additionally, applicants must: 
 

  • Hold a PhD at the date of the call deadline 10 September 2025 (TBC) 
     
  • Have a maximum of eight years full-time research experience, from the date of PhD. Years outside research and documented leave periods will not be taken into account.  
     
  • Comply with mobility requirements: not having carried out your main activity (work/studies) in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 36 months prior to the MSCA PF call deadline of 10/09/25 (TBC) 

How to Apply 

Expressions of Interest must be submitted to Paul Giuliani (Senior Research Manager) at sbm-research@qmul.ac.uk by Friday 23rd May 2025. 

Your EOI must include:  

1) CV, including a full list of publications (max. two pages) 

2) Two-page outline of your research proposal: you should demonstrate how your idea is original and innovative, and the potential impact of the research. You should discuss how the fellowship will help you develop skills and knowledge and help you reach your career goals. You should describe how you will contribute to the research profile of the school and the identified research group/area. 

3)  A statement confirming that you meet the fellow eligibility criteria  

We recommend you make informal contact with the SBM Academic lead of choice before 

applying, and we can provide support with this if needed. 

 

EOIs submitted before the deadline will be assessed on a rolling basis, with decisions communicated in early June at the latest.  Selected candidates will then prepare the EC proposal with a matched PI supervisor using EC guidance and templates supported by QMUL IRI EU pre award, who provide additional guidance materials and application technical support. 

EC Funding Deadline 

The EC MSCA-PF (2025) deadline date is 10 September 2025 (TBC). 

From 1 January 2024, the UK is an Associated Country in Horizon Europe and eligible to apply to and be awarded EC funding including the MSCA-2025-PF call.
