A tube of BioMin toothpaste
Founded by Prof Robert Hill and Prof David Gillam, BioMin toothpaste reduces sensitivity by up to 90% in just one month, beating market leaders.
BioMin uses a specialist bioglass formulation which binds to the teeth and provides controlled release of low-level fluoride and an optimal concentration of calcium and phosphate mineral ions over a twelve-hour period.
The extra fine particles block the tiny dentinal tubules which lead to the nerve to tackle sensitivity and strengthen the enamel. Meanwhile, smart pH technology reacts quickly to food and drink, neutralising acidity and reducing the risk of decay.
Supply was temporarily disrupted by new regulations, but the spinout is set to bounce back strongly with £1.5m investment raised earlier this year from Group Pharmaceuticals. In 2024, BioMin was the active ingredient in products used by three million consumers in over thirty countries.
Alec Hilton, CEO of BioMin said:
“We have taken the time to do things properly, meeting the regulatory requirements while strengthening the systems and evidence that underpin BioMin. This gives dentists and patients additional confidence in BioMin’s quality, safety and clinical foundations, while giving us a strong platform for our return to market and future growth.”
BioMin’s return-to-market strategy will focus on clinically-led educational content, including professional webinars, educational video series and evidence-based resources to support dentists; licensing BioMin’s bioactive glass technology for use in other dental products, and expanding strategic partnerships.
BioMin’s status as a true innovation in dentistry was recently recognised by the awarding of the Larry Hench Lifetime Achievement Award for innovation and translation to founder Prof Robert Hill. Established in memory of Prof Larry Hench, the original inventor of bioglass, the award recognises a lifetime of dedication, vision, and accomplishments in advancing innovation in Bioceramics – accomplishments which underpin BioMin’s technology.
