Condensed Matter

Module code: SPA5229

Credits: 15.0
Semester: SEM2

Contact: Dr Christopher White

This module provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts in modern condensed matter physics. Topics include bulk properties of matter (e.g. elastic moduli and thermal expansion coefficients); crystal structures and interatomic potentials; diffraction of waves through crystals and determination of crystal structures; dynamics of crystal lattice vibrations (including phonons and the heat capacity); dynamics of electrons in solids; the origin of conductors, insulators and semiconductors; quasiparticles and holes; properties of magnetic materials.
