How does language shape social identity in the French-speaking world? In what ways do history, politics, and society influence the use of French around the globe? And how do other languages coexist with French? Exploring the complex relationship between language and society, this module examines themes such as standard language, linguistic variation, multilingualism, colonialism and language policy, focusing on case studies from a range of contexts to provide a deeper understanding of how language reflects power dynamics and cultural diversity in the francophone world. Some knowledge of spoken and written French is required.
