This module examines the development of the US carceral state. Its aim is to investigate the histories and structures of policing, racial violence, and incarceration in the United States, and how they have come to shape the contemporary political moment. The module also enables student discussion and critical engagement with ongoing current events in US politics and examines political movements for police and prison abolition.
