Module code: LIN4217

Credits: 15.0
Semester: SEM1

Contact: Dr Adam Chong

This module is an introduction to the study of speech sounds in the world's languages - the areas of phonetics and phonology. Students will learn about the main processes of speech articulation and gain an ability to represent different sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The module will also introduce students to how languages organise these speech sounds in a systematic way. We will focus on examining phonological data from a wide variety of languages and learning to extract patterns and forming generalisations about them.
