Myths and debates about human language

Module code: LIN4214

Credits: 15.0
Semester: SEM2

Contact: Prof David Adger

This module introduces students to a number of current debates about language: is written grammar better than spoken grammar? Why do people swear or use slang? Is language change good or bad? Are some languages older than others? Are some easier to learn? Is music or dance a language? Can you tell whether someone has committed a crime from the language they use in an interview? We investigate these and other debates and look at what the most recent underlying research says about them.
