The module is designed to build links between an appreciation of the clinical features of disease and their implications for the design of health programmes and plans. The module will build on the capstone module on the determinants of global health, and introduce students to different approaches and types of interventions aimed at preventing and controlling diseases. The module will cover epidemiology and the global burden of disease. Among the case studies that will be used to introduce students to public health policy and practice are: past and current efforts related to eradicate smallpox and polio; expanding access to treatment for HIV, TB and malaria; the control of communicable disease outbreaks and epidemics; unhealthy tobacco and alcohol consumption; mental illness; diabetes; and child obesity.
