This module introduces some of the key concepts elaborated by foundational thinkers in psychoanalysis: Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Melanie Klein. Topics covered may include: the history of psychoanalysis in continental Europe and in Britain; the idea of the unconscious; the notion of the archetype; object relations theory; psychoanalysis as a model for analysing literature, culture and society; psychoanalysis and feminism; psychoanalysis and translation; child analysis; the institutions of psychoanalysis in Britain today.
