The module will introduce students from across the humanities to key theoretical and philosophical issues as they have been approached across different cultural, geographical and historical contexts. The module takes a global perspective and draws on a wide range of texts and cultural objects (from Aristotle and Arendt to Fanon, Marx and ¿i¿ek, and paintings to graphic novels, for example) in order to confront anew the fundamental questions of meaning and value that have vexed human beings through the ages: what is the value of intellectual life? What role does culture play in shaping the world? How can theory help us navigate today's challenges?
