September Workshops with the Academic Skills Centre

As the new academic year gets underway, the Academic Skills Centre is running a variety of workshops to support you in developing important skills for your studies.

There are workshops to help you improve your maths, statistical and data analysis skills, as well as sessions on how to find and access high-quality academic resources more efficiently, avoid plagiarism and manage your time effectively. 

Sign up to any of the upcoming September sessions listed below via the Academic Skills Centre calendar. 

Improving your confidence with the maths and numeracy on your programme: This interactive workshop will look at different strategies for studying and learning maths and solving maths problems, and explore how to develop your confidence in these areas.

Explore Library Search: Learn how to use Queen Mary’s new Library Search platform to find books, articles, and online resources through a single, intuitive search interface. We'll demonstrate key features, efficient search techniques, full-text access, and answer any questions you may have. 

23 September, 1pm – book your place. 
 
Accessing research with just one click: Libkey and Browzine: Discover how LibKey and BrowZine can streamline your research workflow. This interactive session will show you how to access full-text articles with one click, browse and follow scholarly journals, and keep up to date with the latest research in your field. 

24 September, 1pm – book your place. 

Improving your confidence with statistics and data analysis: Statistics and data analysis skills are integral to many programmes across Queen Mary. In this workshop we explore how to apply statistics and data analysis skills to quantitative research projects. We look at strategies for planning and carrying out such assignments, with a focus on taking theoretical statistical knowledge and applying it to actual research questions.

Academic integrity and avoiding plagiarism: This 30-minute session will introduce you to academic integrity and different types of academic misconduct, including plagiarism. We’ll look at practical ways to work with integrity, avoid common mistakes, and make sure you’re using sources and producing your work appropriately.   

30 September, 11am – book your place. 

Time management and independent learning: This 30-minute session will explore practical strategies for managing your time, staying on top of your workload, and making the most of independent study. You’ll leave with ideas to help you plan effectively, prioritise tasks, and develop more sustainable study habits. 

1 October, 2pm – book your place.
