The new Family Room at Mile End Library opened in September 2026, providing a welcoming and flexible space for staff and students who need to balance work or study with caring responsibilities.
The Family Room, located on the second floor of Mile End Library, provides:
- Two study desks with Hub monitors, providing dedicated workspaces for work or study
- Walk-in access, allowing users to use the room without needing to book in advance
- Bookable study desks, with both desks available to reserve through LibCal
- Toys and learning resources, creating a welcoming and engaging environment for children
- A toilet close by with changing facilities, providing convenient access for families.
The Family Room has been created to provide a dedicated space for staff and students with caring responsibilities.
The room responds to feedback about the need for more family-friendly facilities and aims to make it easier for parents and carers to work or study while accompanied by their children.
It forms part of our ongoing work to make Library spaces more welcoming, inclusive and accessible to the different needs of our community.
The Family Room is available for walk-in use during Library opening hours, so there is no need to book the room itself.
The two study desks can be booked through LibCal if you would like to reserve a dedicated workspace.
The room is a shared space and children must be supervised at all times. Users may also be accompanied by a spouse or partner, or by another Queen Mary student, where this does not adversely affect other users of the room.
If you have any questions about the Family Room, would like to view the space, or have feedback about how it could support you, please get in touch with the Library team.
