As part of this month’s theme, ‘Exploring new trends and consolidating good practice’, we are delighted to highlight colleagues whose contributions are helping shape the future of education at Queen Mary. Gian Paulo Canale, E-learning Technology Officer at the Institute of Health Sciences Education, was recently named joint winner of the Educational Professional of the Year Award at the 2025 Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Staff Awards.
The Digital Education Studio spoke with Gian Paulo about his journey into digital learning, the principles that guide his approach, and the collaborative projects that have defined his recent work. These include the implementation of PebblePad, developed in partnership with IHSE academics and professional services staff, and a series of Virtual Reality initiatives delivered with the Learning Innovation Team in collaboration with the Anatomy Team, Physician Associate Team, and Student Support Office. His reflections offer an inspiring view of how thoughtful digital design — grounded in active learning, psychological safety, and scaffolding — can enhance the student experience and support inclusive, forward-looking education.
