In the latest in our ‘In Conversation’ series, we are delighted to be joined by the former Lawyer, Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Science, Innovation and Technology and outgoing Chair of Council at Queen Mary, Tim Clement-Jones CBE.

Lord Clement-Jones is a Liberal Democrat peer, an expert in AI and the digital economy and an educationalist who has held governance positions at UCL, Haileybury and Queen Mary University of London. He joined the House of Lords in 1998 after a distinguished career as a political communications consultant and as a corporate lawyer, including at London Weekend Television (now part of ITV). He was a key figure in the merger of the Liberal Party and the SDP, from which the Liberal Democrats emerged, and is honorary president of the educational charity Ambitious About Autism.

As one of the country’s leading authorities on the creative industries, he has been a key figure in legislative discussions of AI and emerging technologies, and published his book, Living with the Algorithm in 2024. He served as the Chair of the first House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence in 2016 and as a direct result, in 2017, co-founded and has since co-chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI. He was a founding member of the OECD Parliamentary Group on AI and a former consultant to the Council of Europe's Ad-hoc Committee on AI.

Having just completed his final term as Chair of Queen Mary’s Council, Lord Clement-Jones will be in conversation with Professor Elke Schwarz about his early life, his political career, his experience of university management and the challenge of AI. As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in our lives, he will discuss the impact of AI on our politics, individual privacy and data protection rights and his recent book, which explores how governance and policy can keep pace with ever-evolving technology.

This event will take place in the People's Palace which is number 16 on this map of Queen Mary's Mile End campus. You can find it on What3Words at https://w3w.co/slope.themes.pill. Doors will open at 6.10pm to allow us to start at 6.30pm sharp.
