Sound and Music Computing

By undertaking our specialist programme in Sound and Music Computing, you'll develop new tools or products, like audio processors or instruments, and contribute to the expanding music and media technology sector. 

During your studies, you'll align your passion for music with technology through two specialised streams: the AI and Music Data Science stream, focusing on music distribution and data analytics, and the Audio and Music Engineering stream, dedicated to crafting innovative music hardware.

You'll learn from leading experts at the Centre for Digital Music, actively involved in research, running highly successful spin-out companies, and collaborating with industry figures. You'll also have access to our state-of-the-art facilities equipping you with the knowledge and practical skills required for a career in media technology.

This course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the design and software development process for music recording, analysis, and synthesis in diverse environments, such as home, studio, and live performances. 

You will study how musical sound is processed by the mind and brain - crucial for developing creative tools and intuitive interfaces, as well as the creative production of new music. You will also be introduced to state-of-the-art methods for the analysis of music data.

Machine Learning for Visual Data Analytics

The advances in storing and processing visual data are behind exciting developments such as Google's autonomous vehicles, Facebook's image analysis technologies and car plate recognition systems.

You'll be taught by world-class researchers in the fields of multimedia analysis, vision-based surveillance, structure from motion and human motion analysis. This programme is designed to train engineers to work in the analysis and interpretation of images and video.

Your skills and knowledge will be valuable in all industries that require intelligent processing and interpretation of image and video. This includes multimedia indexing and retrieval (eg Google, Microsoft), motion capture (eg Vicon), media production (eg Sony, Technicolor, Disney), medical imaging, security, defence (eg Qinetiq) and robotics, as well as other industries that require good knowledge of machine learning, signal processing and programming.

A number of our academics have common research projects with industrial partners such as Disney, BBC, Technicolor and STMicroelectronics, and take on consultancy work within the industry.

You will also be ideally placed to pursue further research and PhD studies.
