Our facilities

If you are an on-site student, you will learn and undertake research in the multi-million-pound, state of the art Blizard Building. For online students, our learning platform allows you round-the-clock access to teaching material and recordings.

Our on-site facilities

The building was designed by leading architect Will Alsop in partnership with Amec with its 9,000m2 providing world-class teaching and research facilities including open-plan laboratories, office space and the 400-seat Perrin Lecture Theatre. You will be based at the Centre for Immunobiology which has two endoscopy training simulators, and training on these simulators is included if you are an onsite, full-time student.

You will also have access to our Cell and Tissue Engineering Laboratories: five dedicated cell culture laboratories, a molecular biology facility and general-purpose laboratories. On top of this, you will have access to our Confocal Microscopy Unit incorporating two confocal microscopes, enabling advanced 3D imaging of living cells.

The QMplus platform

The online programmes are delivered through online lectures and seminars, podcasts, reading material and guided reading exercises, clinical case presentations, and group discussions via the QMplus portal. The platform provides access to video and audio recordings of all lectures and other online resources, including video tutorials for lab-based work, access to online library facilities and reading materials. Our online learning platform presents the information in a clear, succinct, and interactive way, and allows you round-the-clock access to teaching material and recordings so you can access it and learn in your own time.

At the Blizard Institute, we have a dedicated team of e-learning support staff who continuously work to improve and update the online material so that you have the best student experience. You will also have access to our on-campus facilities if you decide to visit at any point during your course.

The Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology

You will also engage with academics and benefit from research from the Neurogastroenterology Group at the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology. This is a multidisciplinary collaboration of experts, both clinicians and scientists, including adult and paediatric neurogastroenterologists, GI pathologists, physiologists, psychologists and psychiatrists, surgeons, immunologists, neuroscientists, and physicists. They are working across the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and Barts Health NHS Trust to advance basic scientific study and translate this knowledge to enhance patient care.

The academic institution

The programme is hosted by the Blizard Institute, the largest institute within Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Our research and education span broad areas of modern biomedicine, with particular expertise in cell biology, genomics, immunology, neuroscience, primary care, population health and trauma sciences. Our research puts us among the top research institutions in the UK (REF 2014). We work closely with linked NHS hospital trusts which means that the School’s research and teaching is informed by an exceptionally wide-ranging and stimulating clinical environment. Queen Mary University of London is also part of the prestigious Russell Group - a body of leading UK universities dedicated to research and teaching excellence.
