A year of professional experience

Our Psychology course offers an alternative to the traditional three-year BSc programme offered by many other universities – at Queen Mary, you’ll have the chance to undertake a year-long placement in a professional environment.

Placements usually take place between the second and third years of the normal BSc programme, and provide an opportunity to spend your third year of training in full-time employment in a workplace environment. In order to apply for the experience, you need to have obtained a satisfactory result in your first year.

Our students apply for professional experience positions in a range of sectors, including hospital clinics, mental health charities, HR, market research, youth centres, government, and clinical research labs. You’ll be expected to seek out and apply for the experience yourself, but will have one-on-one support from an adviser from the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences.

Completing a year of professional experience has many benefits. It’s an excellent opportunity to put your learning into context and sharpen your skills within the discipline, while helping you to grow in confidence and develop the teamwork, communication and organisational skills that are vital in any career.

All of this is highly valued by employers, and having professional work experience under your belt before you've graduated will set you apart from other candidates when applying for jobs.
