Bridging Theory and Practice

Written by Haril Dixit

My Capstone Journey with ClubCarby

Have you ever wondered how classroom theories translate into real-world solutions? My Capstone Live Project at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) answered this question in ways I never imagined—culminating in an unexpected internship offer that affirmed the power of actionable ideas.

Why I Chose the Capstone Live Project

When faced with the choice between a traditional dissertation and a live project, I opted for the latter. Why? Because I wanted to test my skills in a dynamic environment, solving problems that mattered to a real organization. Enter ClubCarby, a Brazilian sustainability-driven loyalty platform revolutionising the fuel sector. My task was to reimagine their loyalty ecosystem to drive scalable growth while staying true to their environmental mission.

My QMUL Capstone journey with ClubCarby taught me that innovation thrives when loyalty systems reward both users and the planet. What began as academic strategy—crafting cross-station redemption and eco-marketplaces—evolved into an internship where I now bridge theory with action, proving sustainability and growth can coexist

Bridging Theory and Impact

This wasn’t just an academic exercise—it was a deep dive into the complexities of platform economics and sustainability. Collaborating with ClubCarby’s team, I analysed fragmented loyalty systems, proposed a cross-station redemption model to boost user flexibility, and designed an eco-friendly marketplace to diversify revenue streams. Tools like the BCG Matrix and Triple Bottom Line framework became my compass, balancing profitability with planetary stewardship.

The project taught me the art of adaptability. For instance, aligning station operators’ interests with user needs required creative compromises, like a revenue-sharing model with redemption caps. Iterating on predictive analytics tools and gamified carbon-offset incentives revealed how data and behaviour science can drive sustainability.

A Surprise Outcome

While the distinction grade was rewarding, the greater surprise came later: ClubCarby offered me an internship to help implement these strategies. It was a humbling reminder that dedication to solving real problems—not just chasing accolades—can open doors. Now, I’m thrilled to transition from proposing ideas to executing them, ensuring the platform’s growth aligns with its mission.

Final Thoughts

To future students: choose the Capstone Live Project. It’s more than a module—it’s a launchpad for careers at the intersection of innovation and purpose. For me, it reinforced that the best solutions emerge when ambition meets collaboration, and when sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, but a blueprint for action.
