Creating content for digital display screens

Digital signage is used to promote University activities, and cannot be used for external commercial purposes.

Content should be concise.  There is limited space on the digital sign for information; only the most important details should be included e.g.

  • Name
  • Description
  • Date
  • Time
  • Location
  • Call to action
  • QR code and URL (the sole use of QR codes is not recommended)

Most viewers will be reading your content from a distance and/or walking past. If they cannot easily see the information displayed on the screen, your message could be lost, so please ensure that you take the following guidelines into account when developing content:

Templates and brand guidelines

A range of digital templates are available to download and customise for your specific requirements.

All displays and videos should be sent to the Content and Brand team at content@qmul.ac.uk for checking against brand guidelines.  Content which does not meet Queen Mary brand guidelines will not be displayed.

The following formats are compatible with the University digital display screen system (Xibo):

  • Images: landscape .png or .jpeg file format with dimension 1920 x1080px
  • PowerPoint slides: sized to widescreen (16:9)
  • Videos: maximum size of 128M and valid extensions: wmv,avi,mpg,mpeg,webm,mp4,m4v. Subtitles recommended as no audio on screens.

Display time

Display will only be shown for approx. 10 seconds each in the rotation of different content, therefore, your content should be designed for comprehension within this timeframe.

For video, the optimum length is a approximately 30 seconds.

Audio

Audio is not included on any of the Digital Signage screens. Captions are recommended where necessary.

What to avoid

Please note that our digital signage platforms are also easily visible to the public and visitors to campus.
