Advice on how to take professional looking photography of Queen Mary events using your phone, as well as how to plan and collect the correct consent.

Please note this advice is for events where the images will be used online (Eg the website or social media). If you plan on professionally printing your images, you might want to borrow our photography equipment.

Before the event

Consent

  • Make sure you are aware of consent guidelines and have read our University consent policy.
  • Check with the event organisers whether those attending are aware that photos will be taken during the event. This could be communicated via email, an announcement during the event or through signage in the event space (see consent policy).
  • If there are any participants who did not consent to having photos taken, make sure you know how they are marked by the organisers and avoid including them in photos.

Location

  • Make sure you know when the key moments of the event are happening (Eg speeches and awards) and identify the best angles for taking photos within the space.

Taking photos

Camera orientation

  • The orientation (portrait vs landscape) will depend on where the photos will be used. If you are using them on the website, you will likely want to take landscape photos. If they will be used in Instagram stories, you will want to take portrait photos.

Framing

  • Take a diverse range of shots to cover your bases. For example, individual and groups shots, as well as photos from up close and far away.
