B-roll
A-roll is the video clips where the actual storytelling and main messaging happens, and b-roll is supplemental footage that enhances the a-roll, making your video more visually dynamic and interesting.
How does it work?
An example of how b-roll works is as a clip showcasing life on a busy Mile End campus while overlaying the main footage of a student interviewee speaking about student life.
Plan ahead of your film shoot to locate the b-roll you need to film and whether you can or need to involve interviewees for livelier footage.
There is also b-roll hosted on Canto, our official media library. Here you’ll find clips showcasing Queen Mary accommodation, Faculty and Department activities, Open Days, drone footage and much more.
Adding b-roll in
You add your b-roll in during the editing process.
We recommend using Adobe Premiere Pro to edit your video. If you don't have access to Adobe software, then you can use Capcut, an online free video-editing platform, or download DaVinci Resolve, a free editing software.
