Canva accessibility checks

Creating designs on Canva not only means having access to templates, but being able to use their inbuilt accessibility checker.

Canva has an inbuilt accessibility checker tool, which you can access via File > Accessibility > Check design accessibility. This will check for a number of potential issues -

Typography

It will flag where typography is too small to be legible. It is important to remember, though, that text that passes this test might still appear small on mobile devices. As a guide, use a minimum of 36 font size and avoid too much text. A social media post’s caption can be used to contain more information and can be read by a screen reader.

Colour contrast

This should flag where there is insufficient contrast levels between background and text colours. You can use online comparison sites to check colour contrasts, such as colourcontrast.cc.

Alternative text

This should flag any visual elements which do not have alt text allocated to them. If you’re unsure, you can use the “Suggest for me” button to create your alt text. If an item is purely decorative (e.g. a background or pattern) you can tick the “Mark as decorative” so that a screen reader will ignore it.
