School of Geography

Zaynah Rahman

Zaynah is a first year student studying BSc Environmental Science.

What advice would you give to new students thinking about studying with us?

If you are thinking about joining us in the School of Geography be prepared to initially have a large inflow of work especially reading tasks. It will seem like a handful at first, however with efficient planning and time management it will alright, and come exam season you will feel much more at ease.

Why did you choose to study at QMUL?

I choose QMUL because it was a university that took consideration of my background and allowed me to pursue my course. It was my first choice and they offered me an interview under an OPA scheme which resulted in a further grade requirement reduction past the contextual offer - making it a solid firm for me!

What attracted you to your programme?

I initially chose BSc Geography because I was unsure at the time whether I am into human or physical geography as that course offers the ability to do both or one. However, after I firmed my choice and attended an offer holder day I decided to change my course from Geography to Environmental Science as it was the better choice for me as it will help me to go into seismology and hydrology.

What do you enjoy the most about your course/QMUL?

What I like about Environmental Science is that I take some biology modules which I thought was impossible given that I did not take A level biology. The broad range of subject requirements mean that people can still study this course even if they didn’t take biology or chemistry.

How do you think studying your degree is helping you to reach your future career goals?

There are many opportunities given that will help me to reach my future career such as third party courses recommend by School of Geography which is helping me to boost my CV.

How do you like to spend your time away from your studies?

I like to spend my free time by playing video games sometimes, I am part of that games society as well so I am able socialise with many different people from other courses over a similar interest!

What you would like to do after you finish your studies?

After my studies I would like to initially do an internship and then go into research into extreme environments and/or seismic hazards.

Do you have any advice for students moving to/ studying in London?

I travel to university from home as I am close, but to everyone I recommend you to budget your money! There is so much to do in London but don’t do everything at once, definitely buy a monthly or weekly travel card to those commuting as it’s cheaper and you will feel more driven to go to university.
