Salma Dahir Hassan

Salma is a second year student studying BA Geography.

What advice would you give to new students thinking about studying with us?

If you are thinking about studying with us in the SOG, make sure to check out the study abroad programmes ahead of time because they get full quickly.

Why did you choose to study at QMUL?

I chose to study here at QMUL, mainly because of the module options to choose from on areas such as globalisation and international development to gender and identity. Being able to focus my learning onto topics I enjoy learning was one the factors which pushed me to choose Queen Mary.

What attracted you to your programme?

My programme has many opportunities to go abroad, with a year abroad programme, semester abroad programmes and fieldwork trips abroad! I’ve always loved travelling and being able to combine my degree with a hobby is amazing.

What do you enjoy the most about your course/QMUL?

What I enjoy most about QMUL is the amount of societies and the involvement students have here with societies they have joined. I’m now on the committee of Somali Society as Head of Events. Being able to have a release and a get away from studies sometimes is something I’m grateful for and having the opportunity to continuously meet new people is always fun.

How do you think studying your degree is helping you to reach your future career goals?

Studying Geography will help me narrow down what kind of field I’d like to go into. Although I have a plan now, I’m open to change and the range in modules here allow me to have options in regards to what field I’d like to go into.

How do you like to spend your time away from your studies?

Other than studying, I like to spend my time with my friends and go out to eat!

What you would like to do after you finish your studies?

After I finish my studies, I would like to progress to a masters programme in development and perhaps work for an NGO.

Do you have any advice for students moving to/ studying in London?

Be smart with where you buy your groceries, go to Lidl and Aldi! It might be a walk from campus but your bank account will thank you in the long run. If you use TFL regularly, you should look into paying monthly.
