Pygmalion Now Workshop

When: Tuesday, May 13, 2025, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Where: TBC: Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London, E1 4PA

IHSS Visiting Fellow Professor Matt Potolsky’s (University of Utah, USA) internal workshop for QMUL staff and PhD students

This workshop uses Matt's work in progress on ‘Pygmalion and the Machines’ to think about how this resonant myth in modern culture has long served as an inspiration in literature and the visual arts, and might now be used as a powerful exemplum in educational theory and in current thinking about our relationship to technology. All are welcome including PGRs and ECRs.

About the Speaker

Matt Potolsky is Professor of English at the University of Utah, where he teaches courses in nineteenth-century literature and critical theory. He specializes in the literature and culture of fin-de-siècle Britain and France, and also writes on the representation of secrets and secrecy, and on the classical concept of mimesis. Matt's most recent book is The National Security Sublime: On the Aesthetics of Government Secrecy (2019).

About the Workshop

The internal workshop is organised by Dr Angie Dunstan (School of the Arts, Department of English) and supported by the IHSS Visiting Fellowship Scheme. If you would like to attend it, email Dr Angie Dunstan at a.dunstan@qmul.ac.uk.
