Tristram Hunt (V&A) and Paul Nurse (Francis Crick Institute) in Conversation The Two Cultures Debate: Science and the Arts in the Twenty-First Century

7 November 2018

Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm
Venue: People's Palace (Great Hall), Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London, E1 4NS

This event explores the place of the arts in science and technology today. Almost 60 years after C.P. Snow's landmark lecture, we revisit the idea of "the two cultures". Do scientists speak a different language to that of artists? Has art grown too obscure and could it ever be instructive to scientific advancement? Or are the arts and sciences more perfectly fused in a future increasingly shaped by design technology? In this debate, we ask how far intellectual life really has been split between the arts and sciences, and whether there is space for STEM to become STEAM.
