The Mile End Group is pleased to host the launch of Dr Michael Goodman’s ‘The Official History of the Joint Intelligence Committee, Volume I’, for its 109th event. This official history explores the story of the JIC from its origins as a sub-committee for the Committee of Imperial Defence in 1936, through it’s reorientation during World War Two into its role during the Suez crisis. Drawing upon a range of released and classified documents, the first official history of the JIC offers a fascinating insight into how intelligence policy was formed through the Second World War and the early years of the Cold War.

The event will feature a panel discussion of the history of the JIC. The high-profile panel shall feature: Dr Michael Goodman, (Reader in Intelligence & International Affairs at King’s College); Mr Jon Day (Current head of the JIC); Lord Hurd of Westwell (who held several senior positions in the Major government, including serving as Home Secretary) and Sir Kevin Tebbit (Visiting Professor at Queen Mary and former Director of GCHQ). The discussion will be of particular relevance to students, academics, civil servants and business leaders with an interest in intelligence policy and the hidden wiring of the British state.
A drinks reception will follow the lecture.
