Orchestra in a Weekend
Part of a program of events to mark the reopening of the People's Palace
The Water City Festival Orchestra was formed in October 2010, when East London performers and artists came together for the first time to rehearse and perform a musical programme in one weekend, and were filmed by the BBC and ITV. The Orchestra has grown from there and aims to showcase musicians and artists living, studying and working in and around the East End to help inspire and promote the wealth of creative talent in our area for years to come.
The event will tell the story of the Lower Lea Valley - its past, present and future - through music, pictures and narration. With the Olympics now over, what is the future legacy for East London? This occasion will seek to tell the 'inside' story from East London's perspective, capture the enthusiasm of the Games and generate a sense of excitement and shared purpose for the future. This event comes at the half way point in the Lower Lea Valley 50 year journey in regeneration. It will seek to describe the opportunities now emerging as this new metropolitan district of London - Water City - emerges around the Olympic Park from the network of six miles of rivers and canals that connect the Lower Lea Valley with the City and Canary Wharf.
The central works in the performance include excerpts from Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, Sibelius ‘Karelia Suite’, and Saint-Saëns ‘Danse macabre’. The Water City Festival Orchestra is delighted to welcome back Rupert Bond to conduct and Michael Bochmann to lead the orchestra and QM joins with them in cordially inviting you to be part of this momentous occasion.
