The Labour Party and the British New Left

27 June 2012

Time: 10:15am
Venue: The Council Room, One Birdcage Walk, Westminster, SW1

Labour movement and the post-1956 British New Left. Contemporary discussions of ideological renewal within Labour around themes such as community, reciprocity and democratic participation in economy and society provide a new context in which to consider the distinct contribution made by New Left thinkers and activists in terms both of influencing and critiquing Labour thinking and policymaking. Papers will take either New Left thought or Labour debates and/or policy as their starting point, but the key aim is to reflect on the relationship between the two.

Speakers include Jon Cruddas MP, Mike Rustin (UEL), Jonathan Rutherford (Soundings), Hilary Wainwright (Red Pepper), Mark Wickham Jones (Bristol), Marc Stears (University College Oxford and IPPR), Robin Archer (LSE), Paul Nowak (TUC), Graeme Cooke (IPPR) and Anthony Barnett (OpenDemocracy).

Sponsors: Queen Mary University of London, University College Oxford, Institute for Public Policy Research, Political Studies Association Labour Movements Specialist Group.
