Writer in Residence - Stephen Watts

9 May 2011 - 29 May 2011

Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm
Venue: Various

Between May 9th 2011 and May 29th 2011, the writer and poet Stephen Watts will reside at the Centre for the Study of Migration at Queen Mary, University of London. During this time, he will work on a project entitled ‘Ekattorer Chithi: Letters from 1971’:

Ekattorer Chithi: Letters from 1971 will focus on the translation of selected letters from the book Ekattorer Chithi (letters by participants of the 1971 war of independence) published recently by Promotha Prokoshan in Dhaka. Stephen Watts will work on these translations together with writers from Bishwo Sahitya Kendro (UK)

Stephen Watts will offer FOUR workshops while on this project, during which he will bring in first & draft translations of ten letters/extracts from Ekattorer Chithi. In the workshop, he will focus both on the translations and also discuss the contexts of the letters in the light of the war of 1971. Watts is particularly eager to explore their sense of the events of 1971 with students from Queen Mary (especially those of Bangla background) to discover the extent to which the war of independence is something ‘near the surface’ of their own family histories.

Workshops will take place as follows:

May 15th 2011 from 2pm to 4pm at Wodeham Gardens Community Room, 32, Vallance Road, London E1 5HR

May 22nd 2011 from 2pm to 4pm at Wodeham Gardens Community Room, 32, Vallance Road, London E1 5HR
